Health Benefits of Litti Chokka – Veg Indian Dish Recipe

Have you ever heard of litti chokha before? Litti chokha is a complete meal that is made of dough balls, made up of whole wheat flours, eggplants, plus black gram flour and stuffed with roasted chickpea flours. They are then mixed with herbs and spices before being roasted on coal. 

The stuffing itself is made of lentils, and can also be eaten with yoghurt, ghee, papad crackers, or brinjal bhartha aka mashed potatoes. In terms of serving, litti chokha is ideal to be served at special occasions like gatherings, parties, etc. What are the health benefits of litti chokha? 

What are its Health Benefits? 

  1. Eggplants Contain Fibre, Vitamins and Minerals 

Eggplants contain decent values of fibre, vitamins and also minerals, in which it has 3 grams of fibre, and decent reserves of potassium and manganese. 

2. Eggplants are High in Antioxidants 

Eggplants contain anthocyanins at high levels, which are pigments that contain antioxidant properties, used for protection against cellular damage. 

3. Benefits of Eggplant for Heart Health

Several studies involving animals also revealed that eggplants improve heart function by lowering down low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and triglyceride levels. Despite that, more human researches are still needed.

How to Cook Litti Chokha 

Ingredients 

  • 1 eggplant 
  • 1 medium-sized tomato health benefits, chopped 
  • 3 cloves of chopped benefits of garlic for asthma treatment 
  • 1 green chili, chopped 
  • ½ teaspoon of lemon juice 
  • 1 spring of coriander leaves, chopped 
  • ½ grams of black gram flour (sattu) 
  • 1 teaspoon of mustard oil 
  • 1 teaspoon of salt 
  • 1 teaspoon of lemon juice 
  • ½ teaspoon of thymol seeds 
  • ½ teaspoon of nigella seeds 
  • ½ teaspoon of grated ginger 
  • ½ teaspoon of chopped coriander leaves 
  • 1 chopped green chili 
  • 1 teaspoon of pickled masala 
  • 1 cup of whole wheat 
  • 1 tablespoon of mustard oil 
  • 1 pinch of salt 
  • Some water 

Steps 

  1. First, to prepare the dough, take a mixing bowl, and add wheat flour, mustard oil, and a pinch of salt. Add some water to ease the kneading process.
  2. 2. In a separate bowl, gather the black gram flour, pickles, mustard oil, lemon juice, ginger, coriander leaves and salt together. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius.
  3. 3. Divide and flatten the dough to make way for the filling. Place a spoonful of the filling in the middle of the flattened dough, close the dough by the edges and roll it into a ball. 
  4. Place the dough balls on a tray, and let it bake on the oven for 2 to 3 minutes until it is crisp. Once done, prepare it on a plate. 
  5. Moving on to the chokha, wash and slit the eggplants open. Place a layer of aluminium foil on the tray, and place the eggplants and tomatoes on top of it. Roast them at the highest temperature. 
  6. When done, peel their skins and mash them on a separate bowl. Add also garlic, salt, mustard oil, lemon juice, green chilis and chopped coriander leaves on the same bowl. Mix them well, transfer it to a mini serving bowl, and the chokha is now ready. 
  7. Litti chokha is now ready to be served!Â
