History

Blueberries are native North America fruits. Native Americans was the first who introduced the uses of blueberries in food, drink, medicine and dye to the settlers. Wild blueberry shrubs plant only grow until reach 1 to 2 feet tall and tolerate to quite cold climate.

In the beginning of 20th century, people didn’t think that they can cultivated and domesticated blueberries. Later, Elizabeth White, the daughter of a New Jersey farmer, was started to grow an industry to cultivate blueberries. In 1911, with the help of USDA botanist Frederick Coville, they identified wild plants and tried to create new varieties of blueberry.

Even blueberries are grown worldwide nowadays, North America leads the production of blueberries, it supply 90 percent of the world’s berries in the market. People in North America used to harvest blueberry from mid-April through early October depend on climate and location. The peak time of harvest usually occurs during July, which known as National Blueberry Month.

Plant Description

Blueberry is erect plant with the shrub that can grow from 10cm to 4 meters in height. Cultivated blueberry usually smaller species (low – bush blueberry) compared to wild blueberry (high-bush blueberry). Blueberry has evergreen with ovate or lanceolate leaves and 1-8cm long. The flowers are white, red or pink, pale color with bell shaped. The fruit itself is berry with diameter between 5-6 milimeters. Unripe blueberries are greenish then turn into reddish purple and finally when the fruits are ripe the turn into dark purple color.

  • If you have a lots of blueberry along berry seasons, you can freeze the fruits and store the for longer period even for whole year.
  • Even it is not necessary, you can rinse the berries just before you freeze it. But make sure you dry it before freezing process.
