Bolillos or pan Frances, meaning “French bread” is a type of Latin American bread influenced by French pastries. Become a product of an era where French cultural and political influence in Mexico was heavy, they are visually similar to baguette, in fact often argued as being a variant of it, however bolillos are much shorter and are baked using stone ovens.
Bolillos have a delicious yet savoury taste, with a crunchy crust and a tender inside. And also, Bolillos are also pretty much multi-purpose; they are suitable to be enjoyed at breakfast, lunch or dinner, and can be made into tortas or molletes. How to Make Bolillos
- 2 cups of warm water
- 1 packet of active dry yeast
- 4 cups of bread flour
- 1 teaspoon of health benefits of sea salt
- 1 teaspoon of sugar
- 1 whisked egg white
- First, prepare yourself with a bowl filled with water, and sprinkle some yeast into the surface of the water.
- In a separate bowl, mix flour, salt, and sugar. Mix them well.
- Add the flour mixture into the yeast, and mix them until a dough starts to form.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it using a warm cloth and leave it for an hour.
- Remove the dough from the bowl, punch it down and knead it for 10 minutes.
- Divide the dough into 10 separate sections.
- Roll the balls on the palm for about 5 seconds until it forms into the shape of a cylinder with tapered edges. That is how the normal bolillo shape should look like.
- Afterwards, place the shaped dough on a baking sheet.
- Cover it in order for the dough to rise in about 30 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 190 degrees Celsius.
- Brush each and every dough with whisked egg white.
- Place them in the oven and let it bake for 30 minutes.
- Remove them, and let them cool for a while.
- Bolillos are now ready to be served!
