The name “tteokbokki” literally means “stir-fried rice cakes”, and the term “tteok” refers to the long cylinder-shaped rice cakes that is used as the main ingredient of this dish. How to Cook Tteokbokki
Main Ingredients
- 350 g of Korean rice cakes
- 150 g of Korean fish cakes
- 2 cups of anchovy and kelp soup stock
- 60 g of onion
- 1 teaspoon of roasted sesame seeds
- 1 teaspoon of sesame oil
- 1 stalk of finely chopped green onion
Sauce Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons of Gochujang (Korean chilli paste)
- 5 tablespoons of raw sugar
- 1 tablespoon of soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon of minced garlic
- 1 teaspoon of gochugaru (Korean chilli flakes)
Steps
- First, soak the cakes in warm water for 10 minutes until they get soft.
- Boil the soup stock in a shallow pot at medium heat then stir it to dissolve the sauce. Once it boils, add the rice cakes, fish cakes and onion.
- Boil the recently added items for another 3 to 5 minutes until it cooks. To thicken the broth and to intensify the flavour, lower down the heat and let it simmer for 2 to 4 minutes.
- Finally, add the sesame oil, sesame seeds and green onions as garnish.
- Tteokbokki is now ready to be served warm!
